In particular, I was having trouble with subnets and the in the head calculations that would be of benefit to have.
This book is very well organized, when comparing it to the other CCNA material I've read, this book groups all the little bits of information together. So you will get all the information on broadcast packets together in a few pages, rather than having to hunt around the book. It's been done well.
The book doesn't spoon feed you, so you will want to be comfortable with Cisco routers in general. If you have already read the core Cisco Press books, that will give you enough of an idea to read this book more.
As a complete beginner, I would step away from this book, but coming up to the exam, this book is golden, and will be the sort of book that you will re-read quite a few times.
Beyond the CCNA
As the book is tailored very much for the CCNA, which obvious is tailored to the practical application of using Cisco routers, the book focuses very much on the commands to execute on the router. The writing is very much of an experience network beginners guiding a beginner into the commands. It's fill with a lot of tips, some for the CCNA, and other just for the knowledge. So you get the impression your getting better all round Cisco knowledge rather than just tailored solely for the CCNA. There's always a sense of cheating when it comes to using books and tesking to just pass an exam, rather than truely understand the point of it. This book goes beyong the exam, by using little tid bits of information, and detailing that though it may not be in the CCNA it's of benefit to be aware of it.
Chapters
Questions and Answers are provided at the end of each chapter. Personally, I don't like that style, but it's always a nice to have. The answers are displayed below each question. One thing to note though, the book does not have a table of contents nor a index, which was annoying, studying, using Testking and jumping around on the printed version I made was a pain. You do need to sit in front of a computer to study.
Section Five - Binary Math and Subnetting
Section Nine, p312 - EIGRP
Improvements
This book is by no means complete and definitely not for the beginner. There was too many items that seemed to be left out. For exams, I work of Testking as my guide, and then search, read and practice what I don't know about. For this ebook in particular, it left out any information on ATM, LCP (building a list as I go).
Which was weird. Everything else really does seem on the ball when it comes to the writing style.
